One-Off Feature

Are you inspired by the idea of going off grid for a few days?  If so, this delightful woodland cabin in Devon is for you.  Rustic, simple and eco friendly, it’s beautifully secluded from the rest of the world and is the perfect place for quiet reflection, birdwatching and walking.

General Info

Featured in the Guardian in August 2019, it's the very essence of eco, set in a rescued woodland.  When building the cabin we tried to use locally sourced and reclaimed materials wherever possible. Some of the slates on the roof were left over from building our house. The rest are reclaimed Cornish slate. It is clad in local timber giving it a look which fits with its woodland surroundings. The look is finished off by a carving by Daniel Cordell who is a world renowned chainsaw carver.  The cabin is built up to proper building standards meaning that it is well insulated and with the woodburner roaring, it’s a fantastic place for a winter break.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Hensons Wood near Rackenford in Devon is home to the Bulworthy project, one couple’s experiment in low impact living and working.  The couple behind the project built the cabin, but they also run a host of courses, so you’re unlikely to want to venture further than the woodland that is on your doorstep.  They offer all their guests a free guided walk around the woods.  And if you fancy heading off site, then you have the delights of Devon on your doorstep.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details
The cabin has some beautiful wooden features, some of which are the result of our own woodland management work. The post and beam framework at the front of the cabin is made from naturally fallen heartwood oak. The window ledges are cherry that we felled as part of a coppice restoration project before we moved into our own woods. The bed head is made of holly from the same woods. The flooring is reclaimed parquet. Not only is it beautiful and very sustainable due to being reclaimed, it increases the feeling of warmth in the cabin.  There is an electric cool box large enough for bottles of champagne. The woodburner heats the cabin and the hot water and the electricity is provided by solar panels. There is a generously sized en suite and a kitchenette. There is no 240v mains electricity, but there are two USB sockets so that you can charge your phone and other devices. The cabin also benefits from wifi. There’s a small wardrobe with coat hangers.  Also a selection of books including wildlife identification guides, a local ordnance survey map and some games.

Exterior Details
If you’d prefer to cook outside, we provide a barbecue for your use. There's also a hammock where you can while away some peaceful hours listening to woodland life around you.  During your stay in the cabin, you are welcome to explore the woodland that Bulworthy Project is set in.  This woodland has been described by Devon Wildlife Trust as “a mosaic of habitats”.  It contains areas of species rich grassland, a pond and a stream as well as many varied areas of woodland each with it’s own character.  It is managed with habitat enhancement as the main priority.  As well as a multitude of different species of birds including tawny owls and buzzards, you may well see deer and if you’re quiet, you may see badgers, stoats and foxes.

Conditions of Rental
A guided walk around the woods is included in the price. Due to the nature of the cabin it is not suitable for children. We do not allow dogs or other pets at Bulworthy Project due to ground nesting birds and other environmental considerations. The cabin is fully wheelchair accessible.  If you have specific accessibility requirements, please do contact us in advance so that we can cater for your needs.  Flexible arrival and departure days.
