Isle of Wight
If it’s a unique holiday destination you’re after, then you should start looking for places to stay on the Isle of Wight. For a start, there are an awful lot of beaches, many of them award-winning. Visit Ventnor, with its Victorian terraced town, Totland Bay where the whole family can bronze and bathe in cleanliness and comfort, or the tranquil and wildlife-filled St Helens beach. Of course, water sports are popular everywhere on the island, but perhaps nowhere more so than in Cowes, home to the famous Cowes Week sailing event. The Solent, which is the stretch of water that divides Hampshire and the Isle, is renowned for its excellent yachting and although it is always busy, it is never so packed as during this week in August. There are also dozens of lovely towns - Bembridge, with its National Trust windmill and well-known lifeboat station, is a charming place, and Yarmouth with its attractive port is also well worth a visit. Likewise, the charming parish of Brading has a fascinating heritage and Freshwater’s white cliffs and traditional pubs make for a great day out. These towns all have their fair share of theatres, museums, cafes and restaurants and they are all good bases from which to start. Despite its size, one thing the Isle is not short of is history. Discover the ancient Calbourne Water Mill, explore Carisbrooke Castle where Charles I was once imprisoned, wander round Brading Roman Villa or admire the grandeur of Osborne House. Whatever you’re looking for, there is a real diversity of places to stay on the Isle of Wight and they will all offer you a delightful British escape.
