Complete with towers and spiral stairways, this Grade II* listed medieval hideaway boasts 700 years of history and has now been converted into a luxurious retreat for two. What could be more romantic?
Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to stay in a gatehouse? Now’s your chance. Built around the year 1270 in the time of Edward I, the Gatehouse is a period property which has been lovingly converted and refurbished. Bursting with original features from old beams and thick walls to stone mullion windows, you can really feel the history all around you, and yet it is equipped with all the mod cons and contemporary comforts you could want for a cosy and relaxing stay. Characterful and quixotic, this is the perfect sanctuary to share with a loved one.
The Gatehouse is the perfect base from which to explore South Wales and there is plenty to do in the local area. You could spend a day at the Museum of Welsh life (St Fagans), Chepstow Racecourse, angle at Mathern Mill Fishery, sample local foods at Newhall Farm Shop or visit Caerleon, the site of one of Britain’s three permanent Roman legionary fortresses. Alternatively, there are lots of lovely walks not far from your doorstep, and the Wye Valley is beautiful. If you want you could play a round at St Pierre Golf Course, which is next door, or you could wander round Chepstow. And if you want world-class food, visit the Crown at Whitebrook, one of only two restaurants in Wales to be awarded a coveted Michelin star. If you want to stay close to home, there is a pub half a mile down the road, a farm shop and garden centre 5 minutes away and several restaurants within a 10 minute drive.
