The Lookout Tower is in an amazing location on the top of Beer Head cliffs in East Devon, with panoramic coastal views stretching from Portland Bill to Start Point. Walking distance to the beach as well as the nearby fishing villages of Beer and Branscombe, it’s an excellent choice of holiday accommodation for groups of 4-6 at any time of year.
Records suggest the site has been inhabited since the late 1700s, first as a signal station for the Napoleonic war, and later to look out for smugglers and as a coastguard lookout. The original structure of the building has been almost entirely preserved, and an extension added. The renovation was done with the environment in mind - the tower has an air source heat pump, solar panels and borehole water, and bee bricks and swallow cups have been incorporated into the build.
The tower sits right on the south west coast path so walkers are in heaven here. It’s a 10 minute walk (through an SSSI - Site of Specific Scientific Interest) to the secluded Hooken beach, and the beaches of Beer and Branscombe are also just a short walk. There are a couple of pubs and a cafe in the village of Branscombe which are well worth a visit, and the village of Beer has restaurants, shops and pubs. There are National Trust properties to visit, the larger towns of Sidmouth and Seaton, and areas of outstanding natural beauty for you to enjoy.
