One-Off Feature

This charming railway cottage in South Shropshire is set among rolling hills on the Heart of Wales line.  A renovated Victorian railway building, it’s a perfect base for walking, cycling, peace and quiet, and an excellent choice for anyone in search of railway retreats.

General Info

If it’s quirky accommodation or unusual places to stay you’re after, then this is a wonderful choice.  Located in the small village of Bucknell, it’s within walking distance of two pubs and is adjacent to the rural Heart of Wales line.  Bucknell Station was opened in 1861 and is the best preserved of the original Knighton Railway buildings.  The current owners bought the station from the son of the last Stationmaster who has happy memories of growing up on the railway, helping the porters and sometimes getting a ride in the guard’s van!  Aside from passengers, trains from this station were often transporting wood, coal and sugar beet.  In the late 60s British Rail sold off many properties, including this one, and the previous owners converted the Booking Office and General Waiting room into residential accommodation.  The cottage is grade II listed and is recognised as an architectural gem of significant historical interest.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

The local village of Bucknell has a pub which serve excellent food and is within easy walking distance.  Walkers will be spoilt for choice - there is a wide variety of footpaths and bridleways, many of which start straight from the door, as well as longer routes such as Offa’s Dyke and the Heart of Wales walking route.  There are mountain bike trails at nearby Hopton and Bucknell Woods, as well as hundreds of route options for road cyclists on local quiet roads with beautiful views.  For the railway enthusiasts, this is the perfect place from which to explore the Heart of Wales line - you may even be lucky enough to see a steam train chugging past the station every now and then.  The nearby market towns of Knighton and Ludlow are worth a visit, and for the foodies, Ludlow is teeming with a large number of excellent quality restaurants.
