A new Somerset sanctuary - another glorious cottage escape from One Off Places
After a busy, draining and seemingly non-stop few months I was certainly in need of some R&R and that is exactly what I got at Candlestick Cottage, one of our newest One Off Places.
As I arrived on a darkening December afternoon I had high hopes of my home for the next few days and every one of them was exceeded. The living room was cosy and characterful, with a twinkling Christmas tree to welcome me. The kitchen and dining room were beautifully put together and extremely well-equipped. And the Master bedroom, complete with its huge soft bed, fluffy furnishings and free standing roll top bath, was the icing on an already delicious looking cake.
Unfortunately, the weather during my visit was nothing short of apocalyptic but to be honest I had very little desire to leave the cottage anyway - I read an entire book, snuggled into a blanket on the sofa and drank wine in the bath - it was heaven! And let’s not forget that there is a bubbling hot tub with a beautiful view literally at the bottom of the garden…
When I did venture out I took the 45 minute walk to Hinton St George and it was worth it. Home to the award-winning Lord Poullett Arms pub, a charming tea shop and a community-run village store, you’d be hard pressed to find a more idyllic picture-postcard place. And had I stayed longer I would definitely have visited some of the other local attractions - National Trust’s Montacute House, the Abbotsbury Swannery and the towns, beaches and restaurants of the Jurassic Coast, to name but a few.
You can tell that converting Candlestick Cottage has been a labour of love and it truly is a little sanctuary, whether you’re looking for a quiet solo escape, a romantic retreat or a countryside getaway with friends. I didn’t want to leave and I will definitely be back.
Candlestick Cottage is the newest property at Fords Croft but this organic farm is also home to four other cottages and a handful of roundhouses, yurts and shepherd’s huts. Take a look here…
