Clare, Lanarkshire
Please keep this hidden gem a secret! This was our sixth visit over ten years or so and we just love this place. Barnard castle is a lovely market town with plenty of buzz, the walks from the cottage are fantastic, the river on the doorstep is priceless and the wildlife spotting opportunities second to none. Kingfishers, otters and lots more on this visit. The cottage itself is comfy and well equipped and Rachel is the perfect host in our book - in other words she leaves you to your own devices! People were swimming in the river but we weren't that brave....

Had a lovely week at the boot and shoe cottage, fantastic location very quiet and peaceful and the view of the river really special. The cottage was well furnished and cosy good to have a utility to put boots and coats. I would recommend the cottage as the location is great for many outings. The chickens are great fun as well and the eggs were delicious kids enjoyed cottage too, good time by all.

This L-shaped cottage is much bigger inside than the front suggests, and has been well laid out to provide all you could need and lots of comfort (- sloping ceilings make getting out of the bath a bit of an adventure). Fascinating photo album of the renovation of a building that goes back 400 years. Also a wealth of pictures and articles on the walls with some interesting history. The river was high and fast when we were there, and provided a great backdrop. A really lovely place for a quiet break.

A wonderful haven to enjoy the beauty of Teesdale. Thank you for the roaring fire, home-made biscuits and beautiful cottage.
