One-Off Feature

This beautifully converted farmhouse cottage dates back to 1679 and is a stunning location in the Eden Valley in Cumbria.  If you’re looking for a dog friendly cottage holiday where you can explore the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales on foot, by bicycle, or by car, then this is an excellent choice.

General Info

The Eden Valley is a region between the better known Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. A glorious landscape in its own right, it also offers you the chance to explore both of these well known National Parks and enjoy exploring the surrounding fells and beautiful countryside.  The village of Winton, where the cottage is situated, is in the Upper Eden Valley and is surrounded by beautiful rural landscapes, wild uplands and breathtaking views in every direction from the Pennines to the Lakeland Fells.  The area is ideal for walkers, cyclists and tourists alike as there is both the beautiful countryside, but also historic small towns and quaint little villages to explore.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

There’s masses to see and do in the surrounding area, especially for lovers of the outdoors.  Kirkby Stephen is just one mile away and is a traditional market town with cobbled streets and historic buildings.  Visit the church (known locally as the Cathedral of the Dales) which is home to the famous 10th century Loki Stone, or try out one of the great pubs, restaurants and cafes.  Kirkby Stephen has a heritage train station so you can enjoy a steam train ride, and the well known Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk passes right through the town.  Visits to local fells such as Wild Boar Fell and Nine Standards Rigg are a great day out.  There are many walks along the local lanes; footpaths near the River Eden and at Smardale Nature Reserve.  Further down the Eden Valley is the market town of Appleby; famous for its annual Horse Fair, Appleby is a charming old market town with a Castle at the top of the main street, Boroughgate and St Lawrence’s Church at the bottom. The large towns of Kendal and Penrith are a 30 minute drive.  Golfers can choose from several local courses and fishing folk can fish on the local River Eden and nearby River Lune.
