One-Off Feature

If you're looking for a child-friendly, relaxed and sustainable alternative holiday, then you need look no further – the glamping holiday in a beautiful location is one of our more unusual places to stay. The Alachigh is one of five different quirky places to stay in a 20 acre smallholding glampsite in Camarthenshire, set in a quiet location with spectacular views of the Welsh countryside.

General Info

Spend your evenings relaxing next to a glowing campfire, looking at an endless sky of stars and waking to the sound of birdsong. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a family holiday and well away from busy roads. We are not far from both the Carmarthen Bay and the Cardigan Bay coastlines. The entire campsite is run by alternative energy - wind and solar - with water power happening sporadically!  Beside all the cooking equipment, blankets etc in the accommodation we also have available for use by all our customers a log cabin which has a full size calor gas cooker with an oven, a woodburning stove (a cast iron Victorian cooking range), a power supply for mobile phones (mobile phone reception here is good), battery charging, etc, a sink for washing up, table and  chairs and bench seating adorned with sheepskins and cushions.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Our location is an ideal base for exploring south, west and mid Wales. Larkhill is within half an hour’s drive from the Cardigan Bay coastline with its sandy beaches and spectacular scenery and is also one of the best places in the UK to see dolphins, seals and porpoises. Boat trips are available from Newquay to get an even closer look!  Besides the coastline there are numerous things to do. You can canoe along the Teifi River through Cilgerran Gorge – the home of otters and kingfishers. Or visit an Iron Age settlement (featured on a BBC Production) where children can make Iron Age bread! and have their faces painted like warriors (school holiday periods only). There’s horse riding, fishing, Oakwood theme park, Go Karts, Folly Farm, steam railways, castles and museums – the list is endless! On our doorstep is the National Woollen Museum and the National Botanical garden is not far. The Centre for Alternative Technology is a little way up the coast but easily manageable as a day trip.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details
The Alachigh is 24' in diameter and comfortably sleeps six. There are four single pine beds and a double bed, all of which have covered foam mattresses and pillows. In the centre is a cast iron wood burning stove surrounded by a fitted fireguard. Sheepskins, rugs and cushions adorn the Alachigh for that extra comfort. There is also a sofa bed/settee, a large coffee table/chest (which contains plenty of extra blankets just in case it gets a bit colder at night), three bedside tables, a large shelving unit for storing food, pots, pans, etc. We also supply a calor gas two ringed burner, all crockery, cutlery, kettle etc. and a basket of seasoned hardwood. Also on site there are two hot showers, a tiled compost loo (praised by many of our guests!) and a bog standard flush loo!

Exterior Details
Outside there is a large picnic bench and a camp fire area, together with a trivet if you'd like to cook over an open fire and stunning views of the Welsh countryside. There is a play area for children located on the edge of woodland which has been much praised by parents and children alike.

Further Details
Also on site is a Mongolian Ger, a Bentwood Yurt (Kazakhstan), a Lavvu (Scandinavian) and a Native American Tipi, each of which has its own 'space', separated by mature shrubs and trees, and all connected by hand-made stepping stones.  The Alachigh (pronounced  Al-la-cheeg) is traditionally used by a nomadic tribe, the Shahsavan, from northern Iran.  We've made the Alachigh ourselves (it took about six months) sourcing the oak timbers locally and steam-bending them to form a curve which connects the crown to the oak floorboards. We have covered this wooden framework in a stone coloured 12 oz canvas and adorned the inside with a marquee lining, together with 'drapes' which give a little privacy between the beds and creates a soft and homely atmosphere.

Conditions of Rental
The minimum booking is for two nights. Due to the nature of the site we do not allow parties, stag nights, hen nights or adult groups of more than six people. We ask for no noise after 10.00 p.m. In the event of high winds, or weather conditions that we consider are dangerous to customers, we reserve the right to cancel your  holiday at short notice. Alternative dates will be offered or a  refund on your payment. No dogs allowed. Only full week/fortnightly bookings will be taken during the summer holiday period. Bookings are from from Saturday to Saturday. Payment terms are 20% deposit at the time of booking. A confirmation will be sent after the deposit is received.
