Situated within a working steam railway station, the ICI Salt Van was built in the 1940s and has now been converted into a charming and characterful holiday retreat. One of several railway retreats on site, where guests can enjoy quirky accommodation yet with all the home comforts.
Once upon a time this van was used to carry salt from Cheshire to the rest of the country. Now it makes up one of several train carriage holidays at Northiam steam railway station and although it retains several original features from its past (not least the distinctive red colour) it is beautifully modernised for a comfortable and relaxing holiday. Inside, it is kitted out with everything you could need, outside in the private garden you can enjoy views of the surrounding valley, and nearby there are beaches, castles, historic towns and family attractions. Come and explore the Kent and East Sussex countryside in style.
The lovely beaches at Camber Sands and Hastings are a short drive away from the property, as is the characterful waterfront at Rye Harbour, and historic attractions like Battle Abbey, Great Dixter House and Gardens, Bodiam Castle and Sissinghurst Castle are well worth a visit. Children will be in heaven at the Blue Reef Aquarium, Drusillas Park and the Smugglers Adventure museum, and there are outdoor pursuits galore at Bedgebury Pinetum, Bewl Water and Bodiam Boating Station. Alternatively you can relax with some food at the White Hart pub, the Lime Wharf Café or the Indian restaurant just 100 yards from the carriage. There’s something for everyone in this lovely corner of East Sussex.
