Brand new clifftop coastguard lookout tower in East Devon available for holiday rentals
Accommodation specialist One Off Places is thrilled to announce the launch of The Lookout Tower, a brand new and unique holiday rental located in an outstanding location overlooking the dramatic seascape of the East Devon coastline. It opened for its first visitors in Autumn 2022 and is very different to most average coastal holiday cottages in Devon!
The Lookout Tower is a modern and stylish redevelopment of a 18th century lookout tower which has been transformed into an exquisite coastal retreat with panoramic views across Lyme Bay, from Portland Bill to Start Point.
Records suggest the site has been inhabited since the late 1700s, first as a signal station for the Napoleonic war, and later to look out for smugglers and as a coastguard lookout. The renovation was done with the environment in mind - the tower has an air source heat pump, solar panels and borehole water, and bee bricks and swallow cups have been incorporated into the build.
The tower sleeps four people in two bedrooms. The top floor living room has a log burner and astounding views. Borrow the telescope for some stargazing from the first floor terrace (the telescope projects onto the bedroom TVs). Enjoy the sauna cabin in the garden. The pneumatic vacuum operated lift connects all floors making it accessible to all.
Tabitha Symonds, founder of One Off Places, says: `The Lookout Tower is the epitome of a true One Off Place. The original structure has been almost entirely kept to preserve the sense of history, and this authenticity is perfectly dovetailed with a modern, environmentally friendly and disability friendly build.`
The tower sits right on the south west coast path so walkers are in heaven here. It’s a 10 minute walk (through an SSSI - Site of Specific Scientific Interest) to the secluded Hooken beach, and the beaches of Beer and Branscombe are also just a short walk. There are a couple of pubs and a cafe in the village of Branscombe which are well worth a visit, and the village of Beer has restaurants, shops and pubs.
This extraordinary holiday cottage by the sea in Devon costs from £1600 - £3100 per week, or from £850 for a three night short stay.
