Campania
In the midst of Campania you'll find Naples, one of Italy's best known cities. Beautifully positioned on the aptly named Bay of Naples, it sits in splendour, with Mt Vesuvius as a backdrop. For those interested in Roman or ancient Greek history, there is no better place to be. Campania is a land bursting with myths and legends. Naples has three bay islands, one of which is Capri, a Mediterranean island as chic as it comes. The other two islands have as much if not more going for them - Ischia and Procida. Aside from Naples, the other big crowd puller in Campania is the Amalfi coast, and with good reason. Unforgettable views, plunging cliffs and precarious villages, it is one of Italy's most popular destinations, yet was virtually unknown until the mid 20th century. Head inland to be treated to wooded mountains and glorious walking trails. If you really want to escape the hordes, then head into the highlands of the National Park 'del Cliento e Vallo di Diano' where you will find one of the region's least explored and wildest areas.
