A detached lodge house on Brantwood estate, home to the writer and artist John Ruskin, and built by John Ruskin himself. The house sleeps up to nine people and has breathtaking views of Coniston Water and the fells, in the heart of the beautiful Lake District.
A historic house, museum and vibrant centre for the arts, Ruskin’s former home has a wealth of things to see and do for the whole family. Brantwood offers a fascinating insight into the world of John Ruskin and the last 28 years of his life spent in the Lakes. Filled with many fine paintings, beautiful furniture and Ruskin’s personal treasures, the house retains the character of its famous resident. Guests of the lodge are welcome to enjoy Brantwood’s exhibitions and historic collections whenever they wish during opening hours.
Stroll around Brantwood’s estate which offers magnificent views of Coniston Water and the Lakeland mountains beyond. Paths and trails take you through a wealth of interest from fine and exotic rhododendron, spectacular spring and autumn colour, to ancient woodland and Ruskin’s own unique garden. Explore further and visit Crag Head, the highest point of Brantwood’s estate, or bring a book and picnic to enjoy in the scenic surroundings. Regular guided garden walks during the high season, and activity trails for children during the school holidays. Regular sailings to Brantwood’s jetty by Coniston Launch and Steam Yacht Gondola. Brantwood’s Cafe offers a superb location for morning coffee, a light lunch, or afternoon tea. Free Wi-Fi available. A cosy interior with a wood burning stove for cooler days, and a large terrace with spectacular views overlooking Coniston Water to enjoy when the weather is fine. There is a café at Brantwood which is open from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm (Wed – Sun through winter). The steam yacht gondola runs from Coniston to Brantwood from the 1st April to 31st October at 11 am, 12 noon and 1pm.

Interior Details
The Lodge can sleep up to 9 people in 5 bedrooms - 2 doubles, 2 twins and 1 single. Four of the bedrooms look out across the lake and have spectacular views. There’s a large kitchen / dining / sitting room with wood burning stove (generous supply of logs included). There’s a TV, CD and DVD player. There a three bathrooms - two with shower and one with bath, and a separate loo. There’s also a separate drying room. If you have a larger group, there is also a top floor apartment (sleeping 2) available, which has spectacular lake views.
Exterior Details
Outside, the house has a private patio area. Guests have access to the whole of the Estate. Brantwood’s historical Lakeland estate comprises 250 acres, with remarkable gardens created by John Ruskin, his cousin Joan Severn and head gardener Sally Beamish. Beautiful in all seasons with spectacular views across Coniston water to the fells. Kayaks, canoes and small sailing dinghies can be launched from our shore.

Famous as a writer, artist and social reformer, many great thinkers have been influenced by Ruskin’s ideas. Brantwood remains a place of inspiration. Displays and activities in the house, gardens and estate reflect the wealth of cultural associations with Ruskin’s legacy – from the Pre Raphaelites and the Arts and Crafts Movement to the founding of the National Trust and the Welfare State. With its many contemporary exhibitions, concerts, courses and special events, together with its education work in the wider community, Brantwood continues in the Ruskin tradition today.

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed in the Lodge.
