Set within a walled garden on the Galloway House Estate, this charming cottage is in a world of its own. With its own enclosed garden and heated swimming pool, and just a stone’s throw from the sea, it is a lovely base from which to explore this beautiful corner of Scotland. Specifically for adults only.
Pavilion Cottage is a hidden gem nestled in the far corner of the beautiful walled garden of Garlieston House, part of an historic listed landscape on the edge of the harbour village of Garlieston. Previously a fruit store and two boiler houses, the building played a part in the original kitchen garden, and adjoins glasshouses where pears, figs, peaches and apricots were grown for the former Earls of Galloway and the Galloway House Estate. Rigg Bay, warmed by the gulf stream and with a charming secluded, sandy beach is under 5-minutes walk away. A wood burning stove and under floor heating keep this bijou 2 bedroom cottage wonderfully cosy for when you want to stay indoors, and the grounds offer plenty of space in which to explore and relax. But should you want to venture out, the rolling countryside and the Galloway Hills, not to mention the coast, are on your doorstep and this region has a huge amount to offer anyone looking for a tranquil escape from the pressures of 21st Century life.
The cottage is located within a coastal scenic area on the south west of the Machars Peninsula. Apart from the appeal of the coast (there is a second sandy beach in the neighbouring harbour village) and the natural beauty of the inland scenery, the area offers a delightful playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The Galloway Hills are a wild upland region dotted with lochs, and you could either attempt a strenuous ascent of the Merrick (just short of a Munro) or opt for a low level meander around Glentrool where Robert The Bruce hid with his men from King Edward’s army. This region is a cyclist’s paradise and the 7stanes mountain biking trails are on your doorstep, as well as some gentler cycleways and numerous signposted pathways. The Southern Upland Way crosses the region.
There are several excellent golf courses nearby, you can go trout and salmon fishing, or you could head for the coast and go paddle-boarding, windsurfing or sea kayaking. The wildlife in this part of the world is plentiful and varied, and you may be lucky to spot anything from badgers and ospreys to seals and dolphins, not to mention numerous species of garden and sea birds. For the less energetic you could visit Wigtown, Scotland’s Book Town and the historic Christian town of Whithorn and the ancient St Ninian’s Cave at nearby Isle of Whithorn, the stone circles at Drumtroddan and Torhouse, the castles at Cardoness and Cruggleton (to name but a few), or any of the dozens of gardens starting with Galloway House Gardens within a stone’s throw of your own garden cottage.
The town of Newton Stewart links the peninsular with the rest of the region and offers supermarkets, banks, cafes and bars, and a cinema. Within an hour`s drive you will find the region’s food town of Castle Douglas and artists’ town of Kirkcudbright with art galleries, exhibitions and the museum and garden at Broughton House. Indeed the area offers much inspiration for artists from painters and photographers to writers and sculptors and plenty of plants for garden enthusiasts.
