One-Off Feature

The Saloon Coach is one of three independent railway retreats at Rowden Mill Station, a fabulous conversion of a station building on a quiet country lane in Herefordshire.  It has wonderful views over the Wall Hills, and there’s lots to do in the vicinity.  It can sleep four people, or hire the main station building (sleeps another four), and the Parcel Office (sleeps 2).  Quirky accommodation in a unique setting.

General Info

Rowden Mill Station is set in wonderful rolling countryside, yet is within five minutes by car of Bromyard, a charming market town.  A little further away, approx 35 minutes, is the gourmet town of Ludlow. The Saloon Coach is nestled amidst the railway embankment at Platform 2, ideal for anyone searching for railway carriage holidays. While over at Platform 1, the station building sleeps four people in two bedrooms, and the parcel office, a little further down, can accommodate an additional two.  Meticulously renovated, the station buildings are outwardly exactly as they once were but with modern comfortable interiors. You can rent both buildings together, or for smaller groups, just the station building or parcel office.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat in a setting from yesteryear, or a base from which to explore the surrounding Herefordshire towns and countryside, Rowden Mill is an excellent choice.  The station is within walking distance of a nearby inn at Bredenbury.   The historic market town of Bromyard is only a 5 minute drive away - many good pubs and eating places here, as well as cinema-theatre, shops etc.  The station is ideally situated to discover the cider and perry making trails, or to visit the gourmet town of Ludlow.  Visit the Malvern Hills and Wye River Valley, the historic town of Hereford and the ‘Black and White’ villages around Leominster.  The Severn Valley Railway, the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire and the Dean Forest Railway lines are all within one hour’s drive.  You can go horseriding, canoeing, hiking, biking, fishing, play golf, visit farm parks, heritage railways, gardens, parklands and nature reserves.

Accommodation Details

Interior Details
The saloon coach can sleep up to four people in two bedrooms.  The main bedroom is part of the former saloon and has panoramic views to both sides of the track and the green platform.  The second sleeping compartment has a set of full size bunk beds.  The lounge / diner is at one end of the Saloon Coach and is comfortably furnished with vintage coffee tables, and 1960s styled sofas.  There’s a circular dining table and four chairs, a wall mounted freeview TV with access to Netflix and wifi is available throughout.  There’s a fully fitted kitchen with gas hob, electric oven, fridge and dishwasher, as well as a variety of appliances, crockery and cutlery.  The shower room sits behind its original ‘lavatory’ sign.  The Coach corridor has wood panelled walls, evocative of yesteryear.  It also has wooden grab poles to complete that picture along with five opening windows (including the sliding one on the main coach door).

Exterior Details
The Saloon Coach is nestled beside platform two, the second platform along the line (in the Bromyard-Worcester direction).  The coach is set amidst the rail embankment with the stone bridge as a backdrop.  The green platform is lined with trees and ferns, and there is a picnic table and BBQ facilities.  Parking on site opposite the weighbridge office. The whole site extends to 2.75 acres of lawns and wooded areas including 300 metres of track, a working set of points, a ground frame and other GWR station technical memorabilia.

Conditions of Rental
No trains pass by on the tracks anymore of course, but due to the platforms, track and other railway detail, we would recommend that Rowden Mill Station is best suited to babies in arms, or to older children.  Feel free to contact us if unsure of suitability.  Minimum stay 2 nights.  Sorry, no pets.

This is the perfect spot to stay and relax. Booked it to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday as a surprise as he’s train mad. There were lots of quirky features and we particularly enjoyed the log fires. Wish we could have stayed longer.

It was great fun to stay in the coach, which was very comfortable and has a wonderful view of the railway and station. It is a lovely location surrounded by trees. I wish we had stayed longer.

Such a fantastic place to stay! The train carriages are beautifully and comfortably furnished. The owners are helpful and welcoming. We spent a relaxing few days, enjoying living in our own train and watching wildlife through the windows.

This place is magical. This was a birthday treat for my son who loves steam trains. We stayed in the carriage family of 4 with 3 adults and 1 child. It was ample for all of us and even had a feeling of luxury with the finishing touches to the carriage. I felt like we were on a retreat as it has fields and the old railway bridge and station overlooking the windows of the carriage. The beds were very comfy no complaints there. The hosts are so lovely and knowledgeable. This place is worth the stay thankyou.

Wonderful setting in a forest glade with station in the distance. The carriage was extremely comfortable with every amenity needed for an enjoyable stay and a very nostalgic feel (esp loved the BR seat material cushions). Cecilia and Paul were lovely hosts and such a beautiful part of the country.
