One-Off Feature

This iconic landmark house in Headington, Oxford is the epitome of a One Off Place.  A charming four bedroom double fronted Victorian terraced house with a 25 foot long fibreglass and steel sculpture of a shark crashing through the roof.  With modern and spacious interiors, a private garden, and just 1.5 miles from the historic city centre of Oxford, this is a excellent place for a gathering of friends or family.  If you’re in search of unique holiday stays or UK accommodation for large groups, you’ve come to the right place.

General Info

It was the owner's father, Bill Heine, who worked alongside the sculptor John Buckley to create this extraordinary piece of art in secret.  They erected it without planning permission in August 1986 to the shock of the local population, and there was a six year long battle to be allowed to keep it.  The battle with the council escalated through the courts and all the way to national government, at which point the secretary for the environment at the time, Michael Heseltine, made a personal visit and ruled that it should be allowed to stay.  So the shark won the battle and has gained an international following, praised for its meaningful backstory and powerful anti-war message.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

The house is just 1.5 miles from the historic city centre of Oxford which is absolutely teeming with things to do and see, both in the city, and in the surrounding areas.  There are excellent bus services to take you in and out of the centre so no need to drive, and the house is also well located for day trips to London as it’s just a 5-10 minute walk from the London coach stop.  Headington itself is a thriving community with a great range of pubs, cafes and restaurants, as well as a farmers market on Saturdays and lots of shops.
