One-Off Feature

Once the Ashley Combe Estate keeper’s cottage, this charming detached Victorian cottage is in the Exmoor National Park in Somerset, surrounded by woodland and just a mile from Porlock Weir.  It’s a superb choice for a rural break, where you can be surrounded by peace and quiet, yet with the delights of north Somerset and its coastline on your doorstep.

General Info

The cottage is across a bridge from the private Worth Toll Road, next to a stream, and a short distance from the coast.  It’s set on the Ashley Combe Estate, once the summer home of the computer pioneer Ada Lovelace, who was the daughter of the poet Byron.  The estate has a long and fascinating history including eccentric owners, architecture, literature and ground breaking scientific endeavours.

The Area Surrounding The Property / Accommodation

The pretty harbour of Porlock Weir, just one mile east from the cottage, is a former fishing settlement with views across the Bristol Channel.  It is now home to boutique shops and the thatch roofed Ship Inn.  Head west from Ashley Combe and the South West Coast Path climbs through Yearnor Wood to Culborne Church, England’s smallest complete church which dates back to the Saxon era.  You can follow the coast further into North Devon to Countisbury and Lynmouth 10 miles further down the coast.  If it’s sandy beaches you’re after, then Woolacombe is a fabulous beach to visit.  You’re also in the heart of Exmoor here with its high open moorland, woodlands and dramatic coastline.  Exmoor is famous for its red deer and Exmoor ponies, and there are masses of activities on offer in the vicinity, from horse riding and cycling, to kayaking, fishing and boat trips.  Nearby historic Dunster is worth a visit for its Norman castle, local walking trails, and numerous dining options.
