A beautifully converted 1960s heritage railway coach at Bodiam Station, in the heart of the East Sussex countryside. As railway carriage holidays goes, this is pretty special - you can watch the trains run through the station on their way to and from Tenterden. Views of Bodiam Castle and the Rother Valley.
Although in East Sussex, the station is located near the Kent border in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). The area surrounding the station was once owned by the Guinness family and the fields were used for growing hops. Close by to the coach is a hop garden and some restored ‘hop pickers’ huts where you can find out how the local area has contributed to the brewing industry.
There’s lots to do in the surrounding area for all the family. A visit to the 14th century Bodiam Castle is a must - it’s that close that it can be seen from the bedroom window of the coach! It’s owned by the National Trust and is just a few minutes’ walk and open to visitors year round. Also nearby is the Bodiam Boating Station where you can hire kayaks, rowing boats, canoes or go on a river cruise. Hop on a regular steam train or heritage diesel train and take a trip to the historic town of Tenterden, the HQ of the Kent and East Sussex Railway with a Railway Museum. Tenterden also has some beautiful Victorian and Georgian buildings, as well as a wide range of shops, restaurants and pubs. For nearer food and drink, the Castle Inn is a short walk away. A little further afield, you’ll find all sorts of other places to visit, including the town of Battle (the site of the Battle of Hastings), the medieval town of Rye, the gardens at Great Dixter, bird reserves at Dungeness and Rye Harbour, and more.
