Built from warm orange hand-made brick over a century ago and sympathetically converted into a countryside bolthole for two, this Grade II listed barn in rural Shropshire, which looks out over an ancient orchard, is full of sunlight, original features and historic charm.
The Byre forms an integral part of this cluster of listed farm buildings and it is bursting with period features, from an external stone staircase and brick detailing on the walls to exposed oak roof beams and a paved floor. Windows punctuate the west gable, flooding the interior with light every evening, and the barn is naturally warm, with double glazing and roof insulation. Restored using matched handmade brick, natural stone, green oak and old clay tiles, it has also been modernised with white painted walls and under floor heating, so there is no lack of contemporary comfort. Escape to the stunning and tranquil Wyre Forest, where you can relax and unwind in the rustic setting of a bygone era.
The ancient oak forest in which the barn conversion is located stands on the west bank of the Severn, south of the World Heritage Site Ironbridge Gorge. Wyre Forest connects right to the door and much of the surrounding countryside has been classified as an Area of Outstanding Beauty, laced with horse riding and rambling trails so you can explore the old-fashioned way. Four miles away, along a network of cycle paths and through a national nature reserve, is the Georgian town of Bewdley and in the opposite direction are charming Cleobury Mortimer and, further afield, the medieval border town of Ludlow Slow City, with its Michelin starred restaurants and mouth-watering food shops. This area is home to an abundance of fascinating attractions, whether you want to explore Stokesay Castle, ramble the Shropshire Hills, take a ride on a steam train or take the children to West Midlands Safari Park.

Interior Details
The greater part of the byre is taken up by the full height living room, which features traditional baronial hall style oak roof timbers. Lighting is provided by a black iron candelabra and traditional iron wall brackets (not to mention numerous deep windows), the floor is heated and paved in herringbone pattern brick, and the room is furnished with a leather sofa bed and a sturdy dining table. The kitchenette alcove is well-equipped and looks out over a private garden and there is a wet room shower/toilet off the living area. The compact twin bed mezzanine loft bedroom is accessed externally by stone steps and a half glazed door and vented skylight ensure good light levels.
Exterior Details
The byre looks out over a mixed fruit orchard including cherry, greengage, plum, damson, apple, apricot, blackberry and walnut in their season. Sheep graze on the flower-rich land, two washing lines are provided, and guests are welcome to help themselves to fruit. The orchard is designated part of the Wyre Forest Site of Special Scientific Interest, but we have set aside a small area free of sheep for guests to sit out and enjoy the views of the orchard and down the valley.
