A gloriously romantic hideaway for two nestled at the bottom of the lighthouse tower in the heart of the South Walney Island Nature Reserve in Cumbria. This quirky accommodation is an ideal bolthole for two. Lighthouse holidays can immerse yourself in the rugged natural surroundings, the wildlife and birdlife, and the stunning sea views. For groups larger than two, there is another three bedroom cottage on site.
The nature reserve is run by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is home to a wide variety of bird species including eider ducks, willow warblers, sandwich terns, gulls, oystercatchers, ringed plovers, among many others. Grey seals can often be seen swimming in the sea at high tide. A stay here will immerse you in nature and wildlife, and the sunrises and sunsets are not to be missed. For those in search of unique stays or quirky places to stay, this is is a winner.
The chances are that you won’t want to stray far from the nature reserve as there’s so much to see and wonderful walking trails. This lighthouse holiday offers you a wild, exposed coastal reserve with thousands of breeding seabirds, wintering birds, grey seals and coastal Flora. The nearest town is Barrow in Furness, a 25 minute drive away. Barrow is a Victorian town, perfectly situated with the sea on one side, and the Lake District on the other. There are some great walking and cycling routes in the vicinity, as well as a good range of shops and restaurants, as well as a range of other places to visit including Furness Abbey, Piel Castle, and a golf club.

Interior DetailsThe cottage has one bedroom and is a single storey building. The large open plan kitchen / living room is double aspect and is flooded with light. The bedroom has a king size bed, and a luxury en suite bathroom with walk in shower. The living area is cosy and has a TV, and there are binoculars and birdwatching books on tap. The kitchen is well equipped with all the utensils and appliances you might need, including a coffee machine and a dishwasher. Wifi available throughout.
Exterior Details
The cottage garden is equipped with table and chairs for you to enjoy the sea views. There’s ample off road parking, and plenty of trails to explore across the dunes.
Conditions of Rental
Check in from 3pm and check out by 10am. Deposit required to secure your booking. Please note that this is a nature reserve and there are restrictions on where you can wander. FYI there is no access to the beach at this south tip of Walney Island. Car registration details will be required by a reserve warden in order to access the lane to the property. No dogs. Highchair, linen, towels included. The Cottage is next door and is let separately - both can be booked together to sleep 8.
