Nestled in 20 acres of woods on a hillside high above the historic village of Clun, the Dick Turpin Cottage is a detached slate-roofed stone and timber-built property which boasts original architectural features and enviable views of the valley and the rolling Shropshire hills.
Situated on the grounds of Cockford Hall, this warm, welcoming and beautifully furnished cottage is a heavenly countryside bolthole just for two. Outside there are stunning views over, and walks through, a designated area of outstanding beauty, and inside there are well-preserved historic fixtures and charming, quirky furnishings. Throw in some awards, a fantastically helpful owner and a countryside commission survey that voted this area to be one of the three remaining havens of tranquillity in Britain. You can’t beat the Dick Turpin Cottage for charisma and romance.
This is a remarkably picturesque part of the world and the cottage is wonderfully remote, but the village of Clun, with its shops, post office, butchers, groceries, newsagent, gift shops, general store, antique shops, art gallery and museum, is just a mile away. And if you want to eat out there is an excellent range of pubs and restaurants to suit every pocket and taste, not least the pubs in Clun and the Michelin-starred restaurants of Ludlow. There are some wonderful walks practically on your doorstep, including the 1,200 year old Offa's Dyke, and you can also go cycling, golfing and horse riding in the area. The Shropshire Hills offer everything from castles, nature reserves and stately homes to tea rooms, breweries and markets.
Getting There:
From the centre of Clun go south over the narrow hump-back bridge and straight on towards the Church. Follow the A488 towards Knighton for 1 mile, and Cockford Hall is high up on the right hand side. Look out for a red warning triangle (Slow Horses!) on the left, and a green Cockford Hall sign. Take the farm track opposite then the gate on the right up the drive to house.
