One-Off Feature
Set up in the hills, 6 miles south of Buxton, Flash is Britain’s highest village. A wild place with a history of outlaws and prize-fighting, the prizes sought now are stunning views, spectacular walks, dramatic climbs and incredible adventures. What better way to enjoy such treasures than in this bijoux retreat, nestling in one of England’s most fetching farming landscapes. Browse Buxton’s historic, cultural and culinary delights, including the opera house, Poole’s Cavern, Pavilion Gardens and a bevy of independent establishments. Explore Three Shires Head’s communion of counties (6 miles), find the ghosts of Gawain and the Green Knight and spot peregrines soaring amidst the crags.
The cottage has been exquisitely converted to produce an interior worthy of King Arthur’s knights. There’s an almost baronial feel to the unique lounge, with its exposed stone walls and high windows, sumptuous sofa, wood burner, mounted antlers and spiral staircase. The kitchen is a snug home from home, making superb use of wood, stone and tile, and maximising storage. The gallery bedroom is a quirky thing of joy – wherever you wander, you won’t find another quite like it. Tired limbs will be soothed and minds excited by the exposed stone shower room. Unwind with an evening glass of wine on the patio or plan days ahead with coffee and croissants.
Knights and their ladies won’t feel out of place amidst the grandeur of Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House (both 20 miles). Find incredible cheeses and puddings at Hartington (12 miles) and Bakewell (17 miles). Conquer the heights of Kinder Scout (19 miles), Mam Tor (15 miles), Raven Tor (12 miles) and Thorpe Cloud (19 miles). Find rare Blue John in the deep caves of Castleton (16 miles) and take a boat through the flooded Speedwell Cavern. Above and below, there’s no equal in England.
